Import Contact List

11min

Validating your uploaded contact list format and content is vital for optimal broadcast performance, activating specifically when the bot is deployed on the WhatsApp channel. This enables seamless broadcasting to over 50,000 users at once, depending on entitlement.

Contact Vs User

An Engati user actively engages in ongoing conversations, marked by at least one incoming message. Conversely, a contact represents potential users who can receive messages and initiate conversations.

A person is classified as a user if they interact with the bot on a channel at least once. On the other hand, a prospective client that you possess data about is referred to as a contact.

When to use which: User or Contact?

When organizing a webinar, participants who have registered for the event are termed as users, signifying their active involvement. On the other hand, those who haven't registered are referred to as contacts, representing a broader audience.

Another illustration can be drawn from the retail context: customers who visit and make purchases on your website are users, actively engaging with your product. In contrast, individuals who visit the website without making a purchase but provide contact information for future outreach, such as name or phone number, are considered contacts. This information can be utilized to communicate details about discounts or ongoing sales.

Step 5 : Generate the list of contacts.

When creating your contact list, remember to save it in either xlsx or csv format. Ensure to include the essential "phone_no" as the mandatory header to proceed with your broadcast error-free. This attribute alone is sufficient for a smooth processing.

Additionally, you have the flexibility to permute and combine system and custom attributes according to your specific use case.

For reference, you can download the sample xlsx.csv file.

a. User Country List

Within the user country list, you will encounter two options:

  • Single Country
  • Multiple Countries

Under what circumstances should you choose each option?

Based on your target audience, you have two choices: opt for a single-country option if your audience is specific to one country, or choose the multiple countries option if your audience is global and uses various country codes in their phone numbers.

Single Country

  • If your audience is specific to one country, opt for the single-country option.
  • This ensures that only phone numbers with the specified country code will receive the broadcast.
  • Choose this if all the numbers share the same country code, as the default country code for this option will be applied to all listed numbers.

Multiple Countries

  • Use this option when targeting a global audience with phone numbers from various countries.
  • Phone numbers in lists with multiple countries will not be automatically formatted. Input phone numbers in the format <country code><phone number>. For example, if the country code is +91 and the number is 98765432, input the phone number as 9198765432.

b. Upload Contact List

Using Custom Attributes

  • The custom attributes included in the contact list can be used to personalize the content of the template
  • For example, if amount_paid||NUMBER is specified as a header, then this value can be used in the template by using {{amount_paid}} from the list of attributes at the appropriate place in the template
